DeltaRail has launched the newest member in its suite of condition-monitoring products and services: AmbiMon, a portable easy-to-use system for monitoring the ride quality and noise levels of train journeys.
This is the culmination of twelve months of development, involving several railway stakeholders and using the experience gained from on-train fixed noise- and ride-monitoring products to produce one flexible, fully compliant, portable unit.
AmbiMon joins a well-established condition-monitoring portfolio available from DeltaRail, which includes services ranging from real-time track adhesion reporting to in-depth engine monitoring, and which pioneered the application of on-train cellular mobile data technology and global positioning systems.
Alex Brain, Technical Products Manager at DeltaRail, said:
"This product marks a step change in the gathering of passenger environment information, improving the railway journey experience by identifying areas of the track most in need of attention. AmbiMon highlights our commitment to ongoing investment in customer-focussed products, using our team to bring fresh ideas and new technology into the railways to solve real problems for our customers in a cost-effective way."
AmbiMon is one of several new products to have come out of DeltaRail's research and development activities and was developed initially for use on the London Underground network, an environment which is heavily mandated in terms of passenger satisfaction.
New Regional Transport Partnerships set up by the Scottish Executive have allowed additional testing of the product to be undertaken on the Glasgow Subway. The Subway is operated by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) who are committed to enhancing the quality of their customer environment. The 19th century tunnels of the Glasgow Subway pose challenges that our 21st Century technology can address.
The main benefits of AmbiMon are built around monitoring the customer environment and improving it by focussing on the root of the problem, which may be a track or train issue. Conversations with a variety of interested parties have revealed a strong market desire for equipment with the kind of flexibility AmbiMon offers for the over-ground rail network as well. For example, it is currently being used to monitor the noise level and ride quality changes as a new fleet is introduced by one of the largest UK train operating companies.
