Windhoff - Railway Workshop Equipment and On-Track Plant

Windhoff Bahn- und Anlagentechnik is a worldwide partner for the supply of on-track plant, purpose-built rail vehicles and railway workshop equipment to the railway industry. This covers a full range for main line railways, metros, and tramways.

Beneath the design, production, supply and after-sales service for new products, Windhoff also offers refurbishment and upgrade of used plant.

RAIL VEHICLES

Products of Windhoff's vehicle and on-track plant division include rail vehicles for the construction and maintenance of overhead line systems, complete re-wiring trains and vehicles for the maintenance of the track.

Typical vehicles comprise cranes, lifting platforms, cabins for workshop and staff, high-speed measuring equipment and video equipment (track geometry, catenary geometry, wear condition of track or catenary), jet fan handling units, wiring units, drilling, piling or hammer equipment, etc.

Examples for further bespoke vehicles are fire fighting and rescue trains, and Freight Multiple Units (FMUs) on MPV® basis.

ATTACHMENTS FOR ROAD / RAIL EXCAVATORS

Track construction companies enjoy the benefits of using Windhoff attachments for road/rail excavators:

  • Tamping units of different designs are being used for tamping of short and medium lengths of track - the base tamping unit is approved by Deutsche Bahn for subsequent operation of trains up to 70km/h and particular versions are available for the tamping of rails for gantry cranes
  • Ballast brooms are preferably used after the tamping operation
  • Sleeper layers have proven to be an effective means for laying all types of sleepers, even in large possessions
  • Sleeper changers remove ballast between the sleepers as well as single sleepers and smaller numbers of sleepers with the rails remaining in their position, for instance in case of repair of wet spots of the track
  • The mulcher is a versatile tool for vegetation control around the structure gauge

MAINTENANCE VEHICLES AND WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT FOR TRAMS AND METROS

Tramway and metros, due to their particular gauges and narrow curves, not only need particularly designed versions of maintenance vehicles or the workshop equipment, they even need particular solutions. Tramways suffer especially heavily from corrugation and leaves in the autumn.

Windhoff's rail grinding vehicle sets the standard in the field of surface grinding of the rails, to avoid corrugation, reduce noise and vibrations, improve the return current and rail contact based signalling, and finally to improve the lifetime of the rails. The vehicles have the significant advantage to operate between the scheduled traffic.

RAILWAY WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT

As one of the leading companies worldwide for railway workshop equipment, Windhoff provides various plant for maintaining trains and rail vehicles in the workshops.

This covers a full product range including lifting jacks, vehicle lifting systems, wheelset change devices, bogie drops, roof working platforms, shunting equipment, traversers, and ultrasonic testing equipment, up to the turn-key supply of complete depots.

BOGIE MEASURING STANDS

The bogie measuring stands are an example for Windhoff’s competence in supplying test equipment. They are in use in customers’ workshops for production and maintenance of bogies. As part of the quality control systems they contribute to the clients' aims to deliver technically proper bogies, with all measured data comprehensively being recorded within the computer system of the measuring stand.

More than just providing the records for the required documentation of the quality, the integrated records can also be used for statistic process control of the bogie production / overhaul.
