Russian President Visits the ARCHIMEDE Measuring Train

25 February 2007 10:38

Russian president, Vladimir Putin, visited Bari to see the train that checks 120 parameters of the rail infrastructure at a speed of 220km/h.

The Bari summit was on the second and final day of Putin's visit to Italy, during which the Kremlin chief had already met with Pope Benedict XVI, Prodi and Italian president, Giorgio Napolitano. The trip to Bari was symbolic as the mayor of the city, where the relics of St. Nicholas have been kept for the past several centuries, made public his decision to return the building of the Russian church and the Russian pilgrims' house to Moscow Patriarchate.

Putin's visit to Bari also had economic implications related to the improvement of Russian railways. President Putin with Italian prime minister, Romano Prodi, and a conspicuous Russian - Italian delegation visited the ARCHIMEDE measuring train to verify if the onboard technologies could be suitable for the renewal of Russian railways.

The Putin delegation was also composed of several relevant representatives of the railway industry, including president of RZD, Mr. Vladimir Yakunin, who appreciated the MER MEC equipment onboard. During the visit, Russian footage describing ARCHIMEDE's features and potential was shot, and at the end of the film the Kremlin gave his approval to a collaboration betweent Russian railways and MER MEC.
