MER MEC Signalling Technology Turned On Along the Bari-Lecce Rail Route

15 February 2007 11:03

The new generation of signalling technology, MER MEC's powered technology, has been controlling rail traffic on the 150km route between Bari and Lecce, in the south of Italy, since December 19, 2006.

SCMT is the ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 solution that Rete Ferroviaria Italiana is deploying and turning on along its national rail network. SCMT implements enhanced train-circulation protection according to various conditions (signal aspects, maximum speed allowed by line conditions, maximum speed allowed by rolling stock) and causes emergency braking to be activated, in case safety limits are exceeded or a Signal is Passing At Danger (SPAD). SCMT is harmonized with ERTMS/ETCS, the new standard for interoperability on the European Railway Network, and is made up of two subsystems: the wayside subsystem and the onboard subsystem.

The wayside sub-system provided by MER MEC to RFI is made up of three classes of entities: track-circuits - transmission subsystems that use the rail lines as the physical medium to connect to the train; balises - antennas used to transmit data to the train via radio through a little air-gap; and ecoders, which exchange information with the balises according to state of the line. SCMT deployment is an important step forwards toward signalling systems enhancement and harmonization in Italy and Europe. It is a prestigious project to which MER MEC is proud to contribute.
