France, September 2006 - SNCF, the French national railway operator, has selected MER MEC to provide a trackside wheel measuring system to be installed at the SNCF's Technicentre depot on the TGV EST line. This system will be used to allow quick detection of the wheel's geometry parameters in a reliable and precise way. MER MEC's measuring system will inspect TGV wheelsets, looking for and measuring tread wear, back gauge, flange height, and thickness.
MER MEC's trackside wheel measuring system is a wayside device, based on a no-contact optical technology (laser), capable of measuring several parameters of the wheel simultaneously, in a completely automatic way and without any human intervention. All critical parameters exceeding specific thresholds are identified and signalled to the railway operators in real time.
The trackside wheel measuring system easily identifies wheels approaching interchange conditions, allowing inspectors to focus on the issues of analysis and wheel maintenance scheduling, reducing the number of loaded set-outs.
MER MEC's trackside wheel measuring system is able to carry out up to 10,000 wheel measurements a day. The main subsystems that make up the system are: automatic train identification, initialisation systems, opto-electronic measuring systems and visualization and analyser software. MER MEC's trackside wheel measuring system has been developed to be Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 0-compliant.
