SNCF, French National Railway Operator, has selected MER MEC to provide a Trackside Wheel Measurements System that will be installed at the SNCF's Technicentre Est-Européen depot on the TGV EST line and will be used to allow quick detection of wheels tread irregularities in a reliable, precise and economic way. MER MEC measuring system will inspect TGV wheelset looking for and measuring tread wear, back gauge, flange height, and thickness.
Wheel tread irregularities are frequently cause of serious damages both to the vehicle and to the track components. So, saving in maintenance and inspection costs strictly depend on ability to change to on-condition based maintenance of wheels as opposed to scheduled re-profiling of the their surface. MER MEC measuring system has been designed to be easily installed along the track allowing fast in-motion inspection of the vehicle's wheels passing over it.
MER MEC Trackside Wheel Measuring System is able to carry out up to 10,000 wheels measurements for day (laboratory test nominal value obtained in a fully automated configuration of the measuring system). Main subsystems composing the system are: Automatic Train Identification; Initialisation System; Opto-Electronic Measuring System; Control Cabinet; Visualization and Analyser Software. MER MEC Trackside Wheel Measuring System has been developed to be SIL 0 (Safety Integrity Level) compliant.
