04 July 2005

EU and Italian Government Officials, together with top executives from railways operators, transportation systems providers, safety solutions manufacturers, research centres and institutions, will meet at international workshop “InteGRail: a single language for EU Railways” on 15 July in Monopoli, in the hearth of the breathtaking Puglia countryside where MER MEC headquarters is located. Eminent international speakers will discuss about integration and interoperability of European railways.

The rail sector has a clear vision for the future of rail, as it comes out from the first report of the European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC), which reveals its ambition to become an important player in European transport system by providing seamless, integrated high speed passenger services and door-to-door freight services, as well as efficient and environmentally friendly metropolitan and urban mass-transport.

In line with this business scenario, European research priorities are focussed on relevant elements such as service quality, intelligent mobility, safety and interoperability. InteGRail is an integrated research project aiming at making this vision a reality. Started in January 2005, “InteGRail – INTElligent InteGration of RAILway systems” is jointly funded by EU and Railway sector. Its objective is to create a holistic, coherent information system, integrating the major railway sub-systems, in order to achieve higher levels of performance of the railway system in terms of capacity, average speed and punctuality, safety and the optimised usage of resources. Building on results achieved by previous projects, InteGRail will propose new intelligent procedures and will contribute to the definition of new standards.

InteGRail groups 40 international partners among railway operators, transportation systems developers, integrators and research centres from Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Czech Republic, UK, Hungary, Austria, Finland and Chile. MER MEC is a technology partner of the InteGRail project.

Workshop has been organized by “Sviluppo POLIS”, a cultural non profit organization whose President,Vito Pertosa, is MER MEC Managing Director, and by InteGRail Consortium Management Team.

International keynote speakers include the EU Commission Vice-President & Commissioner For Energy and Transport, Mr Jacques Barrot and the Chairman of the Committee on Regional Policy Transport and Tourism, Mr Paolo Costa.

A visit to MER MEC manufacturing plant to see the “ROGER 1000 SBB” Measuring Train commissioned by Swiss Railways will open the afternoon working session.

Workshop participation is free but pre-registration is required.
