For the past two years, ImageMap Inc., from Chicago USA, and Wiener Linien, the Vienna City transport operator, have been developing track measurement systems specifically suited to tramway and metro track conditions.
On Friday March 12, Wiener Linien invited more than 150 European Tram and Subway operators to Vienna to view these new measurement systems and vehicles in operation. ImageMap track geometry equipment and rail wear optical inertial equipment has been specially adapted to be able to operate on a city tram which has been equipped to measure both standard and grooved rail. The Vienna subway is being measured with a new car produced by the Hungarian State Railways “MAV” and equipped with ImageMap state of the rail and track measurement equipment. Both vehicles were demonstrated to the invitees.
The Wiener Linien Project Manager was Dr. Markus Ossberger, and Roger Tracy, President of ImageMap, gave one of the keynote speeches at the vehicle presentations and naming ceremony.
This is the first time in Austria that a track owner has selected a non-Austrian supplier for this type of track measurement equipment. Wiener Linien and ImageMap have decided to jointly exhibit the tram measurement car at the Innotrans Railway Transportation Exhibition in Berlin in September 2004.
