Bombardier Receives $156 Million Order For Regional Trains In Germany

21 December 2001 10:20

A consortium comprised of Bombardier Transportation and Siemens was awarded a contract by Deutsche Bahn (DB) in Germany for the delivery of 40 four-car electric multiple units (EMU). The total contract value is approximately $261 million Cdn (184 million euros) and the share of Bombardier Transportation is approximately $156 million Cdn (110 million euros). Deliveries of the vehicles are scheduled to take place between April and November 2003. Deutsche Bahn intends to put the trains in commercial service as of end of December 2003 for the Rhein-Neckar regional and commuter transport network.

Bombardier Transportation and Siemens are responsible for the propulsion equipment, carbodies, bogies, interior fitting, final assembly, testing and commissioning.

The vehicles of the type 425 belong to the new generation of electric motorized trains which are based on modular design. A consistent lightweight construction helps to save energy. Furthermore, the trains’ braking energy is being fed back into the traction network.

“The order by Deutsche Bahn testifies to the success of the standardized EMU-production,” commented Robin Schweitzer, President, Regional & Commuter, Bombardier Transportation. “We are convinced that the new trains of the type 425 will add to the appeal of the Rhein-Neckar regional transport network.”

Since January 2001, more than 100 EMUs of the type 425 have already successfully been in service in the regional networks of Essen, Magdeburg, Trier, Saarbrücken and Cologne.
