A consortium comprised of Bombardier Transportation and Alstom Transport was awarded a contract by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) for the delivery of 10 seven-car electric high-speed trains with tilting technology (ICN). The total contract value is approximately $204 million Cdn (144 million euros) and the share of Bombardier Transportation is approximately $160 million Cdn (113 million euros). This is a follow-on order on a contract signed in 1996. The 10 ICN trains shall be delivered throughout the entire year 2004.
Bombardier Transportation is responsible for the propulsion equipment, carbodies, interior fitting, final assembly, testing and commissioning. Alstom will deliver the bogies and tilting equipment.
Commenting on this order, Rik Dobbelaere, President, Intercity Trains, Bombardier Transportation said: “the decision of the Swiss Federal Railways to order again 10 ICN trainsets feels especially rewarding, since it confirms the vehicle’s performance since the start of commercial service and shows how well the vehicles meet the demands of modern high-speed railway transportation.”
Twenty-four high-speed trains of the ICN type have been in service since May 2000 mainly on the line Lausanne-Biel-Zurich-St. Gallen. Another 10 trains have been ordered in June 2001. The ICN trains have a maximum speed of 200 km/h. The electromechanical tilting technology allows for a higher commercial speed even on non-modernized lines.
