Bombardier Receives $63 Million Cdn Order For Electric Multiple Units In Switzerland

12 December 2001

The consortium comprised of Bombardier Transportation and Alstom Transport was awarded a contract by BLS Lötschbergbahn AG in Switzerland for the supply of 18 three-car electric multiple units (EMUs). The total contract value is approximately $90 million Cdn (64 million euros) and the share of Bombardier Transportation is approximately $63 million Cdn (45 million euros). Deliveries of the vehicles are scheduled to take place between June 2003 and December 2004.

Bombardier will be responsible for the manufacturing of carbodies and bogies, interior fitting, final assembly, testing and commissioning. The trains will be produced in Switzerland. Alstom will supply the propulsion equipment.

Eight NINA-trains have been in service since November 1999, mainly on the line Bern – Neufchâtel, reliably covering more than 2.5 million kilometers. The NINA-type vehicles, which have an 80% low-floor section, belong to the new generation of lightweight electric motorized trains. With a maximum speed of 140 km/h and a capacity of 300 passengers - including 148 seated - the trains are ideal for service in the regional transport network of the Bern region.

“We are pleased about the BLS-order which is proof of the success of the lightweight EMUs,” commented Robin Schweitzer, President, Regional & Commuter, Bombardier Transportation. “We are convinced that the new NINA-type trains will add to the appeal of the regional transport in the Bern region.”
