Switzerland's second-largest rail operator, BLS AG, has chosen the consortium formed by ALSTOM and Bombardier to supply it with 13 four-coach, low-floor trainsets for its network in the Lötschberg region. The order, worth approximately €59 million, also includes an option for a further 20 trainsets. ALSTOM's share of the contract is equivalent to 34% or about €20 million, not counting options.
The 62m long, air-conditioned trainsets will each have the capacity for 193 seated passengers. Thanks to their four powered axles, each will have a potential power output of 1MW, giving them a top speed of 160km/h.
ALSTOM's Ridderkerk plant in the Netherlands will supply the electrical equipment (traction, electronic and auxiliary controls). The coaches will be manufactured in Switzerland at Bombardier Transportation's Villeneuve site. The new vehicles will begin to enter commercial service in December 2008.
