Union Switch & Signal (US&S) signed a contract with Ansaldo Trasporti Sistemi Ferroviari (ATSF) to provide the Automatic Train Control (ATC) system for Line 5 of the Milan Metro.
This award builds on US&S' achievements in driverless ATC systems in Europe including the Copenhagen Metro, in operation since 2002; Brescia Metro, currently under construction; and the recently-awarded contract for Line C of the Rome Metro.
For Milan Line 5, US&S will again implement a completely integrated driverless wayside / vehicle / office ATC system, which will route ten trains through nine stations along 5.6km of track, with a minimum headway of only 75 seconds. US&S' ATC system eliminates the need for an on-board operator for routine train movements. This system provides all of the Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Operation (ATO) and Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) functions and capabilities already proven on the Copenhagen Metro. Completion of the project is scheduled for 2011.
Milan Line 5 is the first example of project financing - in which the winning bidder wins the concession and management of the line - used for urban transport in Italy. Connecting the eastern suburbs of Milan, from Stazione Garibaldi to Via Bignami, this new underground line will be able to carry up to 21,000 passengers per hour.
