Slovenian Railways (SZ) and Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) today signed a contract in Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, for the supply of 20 Taurus SZ 541 multi-system electric locomotives, based on the EuroSprinter family of products. An option for another 20 vehicles was also agreed. These universal locomotives are to be built at the TS Munich plant from 2006 to 2008. The bogies will be supplied by the Siemens center of competence in Graz, Austria. The contract volume is worth about €80 million.
The locomotive for Slovenia will be equipped to operate on the two-line voltages of 15kV and 25kV AC, as well as on a 3kV DC system. This system capability not only makes the SZ 541 suitable for use in Germany, Slovenia, Austria and Hungary, but also in Italy and Croatia. The vehicle weighs 85 metric tons and is designed for a maximum speed of 200km/h.
This order from Slovenia means that this type of EuroSprinter, which goes by the name of the "Taurus", has been sold 505 times so far. The locomotive is meanwhile being used by operators in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Switzerland.
