Transportation Systems Hands First Hercules Unit Over to Austrian Federal Railways

10 January 2002 16:49

On January 10, 2002 Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) handed the first Rh 2016 type diesel-electric locomotive over to the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). In a roll-out ceremony at Siemens’ Munich plant Group Vice President Hans M. Schabert gave Herwig Wiltberger, Head of Traction at ÖBB, a symbolic key to the first of the total 70 diesel-electric locomotives ordered. The unit is called Hercules and is the first repre-sentative of the new Eurorunner family of locomotives from TS.

This 80-metric-ton traction unit is designed for operation in freight and passenger traffic at speeds up to 140 kph. The diesel engine of the Hercules has an output of 2,000 kilowatts. The maximum power at the wheel rim is 1,600 kilowatts. The locomotive body offers a high degree of passive safety in that its hydraulic combination buffers and high-capacity deformation elements are capable of absorbing 1 MJ of energy.

ÖBB placed the order for this new type series with TS in November 1998 and has an option for another 80 vehicles. Other parties are interested in this new diesel-electric locomotive as well. For example, the Kowloon Canton Railway Company in Hong Kong has just given TS an order for five Eurorunners which are virtually identical to the Rh 2016.
