Siemens Lands Large Locomotive Contract in China – Order Worth €350 Million

06 December 2004 10:12

Together with its partner CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotives Works, Siemens Transportation Systems (TS) has landed a large-scale order to deliver 180 double locomotives. To Siemens the order is worth approx. €350 million. The customer is the Chinese Ministry of Railways. The locomotives will be built at the works of Siemens’ Chinese partner in Zhuzhou. The development and engineering work will be carried out at TS’ locations in Erlangen and Munich. The delivery of the 9,600kW, 184 metric-ton double locomotives is scheduled to commence in the middle of 2006 and should be completed by the end of 2007.

“This order goes to show that it was a sensible decision get in early and position ourselves on the Chinese market as a supplier of high-quality rolling stock,” stated Jörn F. Sens. He is the TS Group Vice President responsible for business in Asia.

The two locomotives of a double-locomotive unit are of identical design and, in principle, can be operated separately. These electric locomotives feature 3-phase AC propulsion and can reach speeds of up to 120km/h. They are needed for heavy-duty freight service, especially for the transporting of coal along the 620km stretch between Datong and Qinhuangdao, where each train will require three double locomotives. With optional added ballast up to 200t, these double units can be used for tougher jobs that call for more traction.

The locomotive is the successor of the DJ1 double locomotive, of which 20 were delivered in 2002 and 2003. This model has proven its reliability and performance in everyday operation.
