The railway industry itself is less than sixty years older than Henry Williams. The company was formed in Glasgow in 1883 to manufacture control and signalling equipment for the rapidly expanding railways network. 

Today, we are a versatile and multi-skilled engineering business, based in Darlington in premises occupying almost 10,000m² on a site covering 4ha in total. We can call on advanced forging and fabrication technology, as well as first class design and project management expertise, to meet the ever demanding needs of the railway industry and our other market sectors.

SIGNALLING PANELS

Signalling control panels provide the essential link between signalling functions and the human interface and are considered to be the preferred method of operation and indication.

Our Domino panel is one of the most reliable and flexible signalling panels allowing simple upgrades and modifications to large or small areas of the panel with minimal disruption. In addition to this we also provide a comprehensive spares and repairs service.

SIGNALLING

Signalling is the crucial link for safe train movements where the safe operation depends upon effective reliable signalling, and fast efficient communications between operatives, which we provide.

POINT HEATING

We all hear about the delays to trains due to frozen points or the wrong type of snow. Henry Williams have a solution to prevent these delays. With constant current point heating, we are at the cutting-edge of point heating control providing simple control systems giving effective results.

LEVEL CROSSINGS

Level crossings represent the highest risk of a multi-fatality railway incident. A collision between a train and a car could derail the train and result in the deaths of not only occupants of the car but also passengers on the train.

Henry Williams offers comprehensive design, manufacture, installation, test and commission, and continued maintenance of all styles of level crossing control systems for preserved railways and private sites.

POWER DISTRIBUTION

The entire rail infrastructure has a continuous power supply system supplied at 25kV, 650V and national standard 400V. All these voltages require a means of distribution to the trackside equipment, which is where we can help.

Being specialists in the manufacture of power distribution systems, we are able to provide a large range of robust cabinets, supplied either fitted out or empty and ready to be fitted with power distribution equipment. The cubicles can be manufactured in mild or stainless-steel, or aluminium, both to our standard designs or customised to fulfil your particular requirements.

TREADLE SWITCHES

To provide a safe operational environment throughout the rail infrastructure it is imperative to have a method of detecting train movements and providing signalling control.

Henry Williams are the supplier of treadle switches which are commonly used to initiate control primarily for level crossings; signal control, axle counting, depot protection and train wash systems.

FISHPLATES – THE STRONGEST JOINT BETWEEN SECTIONS OF RAIL

The forged fishplate provides the strongest achievable joint between sections of rail, the key features being the improved grain flow and the facility to incorporate a strengthening profile.

Our design skills and extensive experience of fishplate manufacture, supported by facilities such as our archive of rail section samples, gives us the confidence to claim that we can offer a comprehensive fishplate range.

EMERGENCY CLAMPED JOGGLED FISHPLATE

To provide emergency repairs on broken welded rail or fractured rail section, Henry Williams have developed an emergency clamped joggled fishplate which enables quick temporary repairs, allowing continued movements through sections at reduced line speed.

TRACK GAUGES – SUITS ALL RAIL SECTIONS

The rail sections used to run trains on is prone to high stresses and wears due to the weight of the rolling stock. Henry Williams have developed and manufacture a track gauge which is quick and easy to use, and gives direct readings of gauge, super-elevation, cant and rail side wear. The gauge is designed to suit all standard rail sections and gauges. Special calibrations and lengths can be made to order.
