Dialight - LED Lighting for Rail Signalling and Level Crossing Signals

30 years ago, Dialight was one of the first pioneers in the application of LED technology and today is the recognised leader in high-flux LED products for signalisation in safety related transportation applications. One of the areas where Dialight has proven the usefulness and suitability of the LED technology is in rail signals. Advantages of LED rail signals are:

  • Very long lamp life and therefore reduced maintenance costs (re-lamping only once every 7yrs to 10yrs)

LED LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY FOR RAIL SIGNALLING

Dialight's LED technology has been successfully applied in rail signalling projects at Class 1 railroads in the USA and Canada, and in China, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark. Projects in several other countries are in preparation.

Dialight's products are being used in several applications: high speed / main line signals, level crossing signals and gate arm lights. Most products are available in 115VAC / 230VAC and 12VDC versions.

LED TRAFFIC SIGNALS FOR RAIL LIGHTING

Dialight's confidence in its technology is underlined with a product warranty of 5yrs or more. This is underpinned by experience gained in other fields where Dialight is leading this technological revolution. Amongst others, Dialight can boast a track record of high product reliability with more than 1.5 million high-flux LED traffic signals installed around the world, some of them in operation for more than 7yrs. Our rail signals use key elements of the same proven technology.

LED TECHNOLOGY WITH UNIQUE DRIVE ELECTRONICS

Another unique aspect of Dialight is that it controls all elements of a reliable and efficient LED product design, ranging from optical design and thermal management to power electronics and microprocessor control.

As high-flux LEDs are proven to be the most reliable and durable type of LEDs, the drive electronics are increasingly becoming the weakest link. To overcome this, Dialight uses its own unique drive electronics, which do not contain components with a specified life shorter than that of the LEDs. Moreover, our drive electronics are inherently safe and fulfil the DIN0832 norm, allowing fail-safe cold and hot filament lamp monitoring.

LED RAIL SIGNALS COMPATIBLE WITH ALL RAIL SIGNAL CONTROLLERS

Although there is no doubt that the life cycle costs of LED signals are lower than of conventional light sources, the initial investment can be a potential inhibitor. The most cost-effective approach is to retrofit LED signals in existing interlocking systems. This requires that LED rail signals are compatible with all signal controllers in active use on the rail network. In several projects Dialight has proven to possess the electronic capabilities to overcome this challenge.

In most cases the existing housing can be maintained, and in some cases even the existing lens.

LED TECHNOLOGY FOR RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEMS AND ROLLING STOCK LIGHTING

Dialight's rail products are not just used on long distance rail lines, but also in light rail transit systems.

Another area where Dialight's LED products are proving effective is in interior and exterior lighting for rolling stock. Examples of this are the 556 Series door indicators and the P46 marker lights, which are being used by some of the biggest train builders. In these applications the main advantages of Dialight's LED products are:

  • Resistance to shock and humidity
  • Very long lamp life and reduced maintenance costs
  • Reduced power consumption
