Since mid-November, detectives in Suffolk England had been investigating the murders of five local women. With little evidence and increasing public outcry, the Suffolk Constabulary pressed on, looking to retrace the last steps of each victim in an attempt to open up the case.
The third victim, Anneli Alderton, was known to have caught the 5.53pm train from Harwich to Colchester on December 3 - a week before her body was found near Ipswich. Since the train she rode was equipped with Integrian's TransitCam on-board video surveillance system, investigators were hopeful that the footage might provide details helpful to the case. Detective Chief Superintendent Stewart Gull, head of Suffolk Constabulary's Crime Management said: "We are looking at many hours of CCTV footage. We hope to get footage of Anneli - we know she caught a train in Essex last week."
After successfully retrieving footage of Ms. Alderton onboard the train, detectives released the video to the public in a bid to gain more information. Det Ch Supt Stewart Gull said, "We are now confident that we can begin piecing together the jigsaw of Anneli's last movements." Detectives received more than 60 calls following the broadcast. Police believe the footage is one of the last sightings of Miss Alderton, whose body was found in the woods at Nacton on December 10.
According to Det Ch Supt Stewart Gull, "The images show Anneli in a carriage - and, for the first time, give us a clear indication of what she was wearing on December 3. The images show that she had her hair scraped back and tied up into a pony tail high on her head. They also show her clothing. On that evening, Anneli was wearing a black jacket with a hood with fur round it. Underneath the jacket, she was wearing a grey top. Anneli was also wearing blue jeans and white footwear, and she was carrying a shiny nylon shoulder bag, which is closed with a cord. We now need to piece together Anneli's movements after this image was captured."
This and other evidence eventually led to the capture of 48-year old Steven Wright. The former fork-lift truck driver was arrested at his home in the London Road area of Ipswich on 19 December, and was charged with all five murders.
