voestalpine: Quantum Leap into the Rail Future

Thursday, July 03, 2003 by Voestalpine Schienen

The corporate bodies of voestalpine Schienen GmbH, of its mother company voestalpine Railway Systems and of the group holding voestalpine AG have recently approved another large investment in the Styrian production site of Leoben/Donawitz: the complete new construction of the existing rail rolling line with the target to open a new dimension of sustained customer benefit.

Already up to now, after the complete modernisation of the group owned steel plant and the rail finishing area (from the 120m cooling bed to the second long rail storage area which was opened just one year ago) voestalpine Schienen had facilities of the latest technology generation. The replacement of the existing rail rolling line now constitutes the last industrial investment stage in this area.

By utilisation of the top modern “universal rolling technology” it will be possible to set new standards in terms of quality and flexibility. On the one hand the preparation times, resulting from the up to now time-consuming changing of the rolls in order to produce another section, can be reduced to a fraction. On the other hand the new technology permits to drastically further minimize the already narrow tolerances. In addition it will be also possible to increase production capacities if required considerably above the present level.

Klaus Meusel, member of the management board of voestalpine Bahnsysteme: “By the investment of about € 66 million in the new rolling line we further expand our successful market position as the technically leading and largest rail rolling mill in Europe with a global claim for quality leadership. We thus comply with the demands of our customers who expect especially from voestalpine Schienen even more perfect products and flexible solutions. As we make no compromise in attaching the first priority to the customer benefit – e.g. in the field of life cycle cost-strategies which are of ever growing importance – we can ensure the mutual success. Also in this sense the new rolling line constitutes a quantum leap into the rail future.”

The new construction will take place in a very short time period, i.e. only within 2 months from end 2005 onwards and will be prepared and implemented by voestalpine Schienen in accordance with a precise schedule. Up to this point of time production is normally continued in the existing facility. The undisturbed supply continuity during the construction period is ensured by the timely building up of a corresponding rail inventory.
