RMC Win Award for Stepsafe

26 September 2003 14:59

RMC Rail Products are the first winner of the British Precast Innovation Awards for their Stepsafe modular platform system, developed in conjunction with Mott MacDonald and Laing Rail.

The innovation award scheme, set up by The British Precast Concrete Federation and supported by The Concrete Centre, is a new award - a world first in the industry. Response was exceptional with 25 entries from a total of 18 member companies.

Nigel Griffiths, Minister for Construction, announced and presented the award at the British Precast Best Practice Awards dinner on September 11th. He commented “The Federation is doing an excellent job in promoting best practice in the industry. These awards bear out that commitment in celebrating the best of the precast concrete sector, rewarding innovation, environmental achievement and health and safety.”

Stepsafe is part of the RMC Rail product portfolio within the RMC Precast Products Division and is a revolutionary new railway station platform, which caters for the demand for longer trains and therefore longer platforms. Stepsafe can be used to create a completely new platform or an extension to existing structures. Installation can be carried out quickly throughout the night, resulting in minimal disruption to rail services. The system utilises pre-cast concrete cantilever beams and pre-finished platform units, which are placed onto foundations constructed without the need for disruptive and expensive track possessions.

RMC Rail Products manufacture a wide range of pre-stressed concrete sleepers, crossing bearers, cable troughing, platform systems and other ancillary products. A complete catalogue and a CD ROM is available on request .
