Stepsafe Platform is Proving a Success

26 September 2003 14:58

Three companies have joined force to design, manufacture and install a revolutionary new railway station platform. The Stepsafe Alliance comprises Laing Rail Projects, Mott MacDonald and RMC Rail Products.

The Stepsafe modular station platform system is an economic and robust structure capable of rapid construction. Full scale manufacture and assembly trials have been carried out and the system is now being installed at stations on The Chiltern Line. Increased passenger numbers across the rail network is creating a demand for longer trains and therefore longer platforms. Stepsafe can be used to create a completely new platform or an extension to existing structures. Installation can be carried out quickly throughout the night resulting in minimal disruption to rail services.

The system utilises pre-cast concrete cantilever beams and pre-finished platform units, which are placed onto foundations constructed without the need for disruptive and expensive track possessions. Once the platform surface is installed, tactile paviors, edge copers, fencing, services and platform finishings can be easily added.

Stepsafe requires less construction time, is less expensive and results in much less inconvenience to rail users than previous methods of building new or extending existing platforms.
