STRUCTURAL INVESTIGATION AND MONITORING

Our railway structural investigation and monitoring expertise includes:

Condition surveys – visual inspection and assessment of all types of structure.

Ecological surveys – rapid checks for protected species and invasive plant species, full ecological surveys and pragmatic mitigation advice, implementation/site supervision.

NDT surveys – Ground Penetrating Radar (GRP) and other geophysical survey techniques for structures, including services searches.

Structural investigation (concrete) – covermeter surveys for reinforcement, half cell and resistivity measurement for rebar corrosion, depth of carbonation, rebound (Schmidt) and ultrasonic (UPV) NDT, materials coring, sampling and comprehensive laboratory testing and evaluation including ASR and Thaumasite assessment. UKAS accredited site and laboratory testing.

Structural investigation (brickwork) – structural form and defect investigation, coring, sampling and testing, including brick testing and mortar analysis and advice.

Structural investigation (steel/iron) – steel, cast and wrought iron and weld inspection, non-destructive testing of welds, plate thickness and embedment depth of sheet piling, metal sampling, analysis and physical testing and assessment. Steelwork repairs, refurbishment and strengthening works supervision inspection.

Structural monitoring – supply, installation and maintenance of instrumentation for stress/strain, deformation/movement, vibration and crack monitoring, including total station systems and remote telemetry, and data recording, management and interpretation with alarm systems where appropriate.

Paint/protective coatings – advice on specification and application of new protective coatings, surveys of existing paintwork, chemical analysis of paint for lead, chromium and other heavy metals, advice on routine and remedial maintenance painting and paintwork supervision inspection.

Concrete repair – evaluation of repair requirements, specification and contract administration/supervision.

GEOTECHNICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEYS

Condition surveys – visual inspection and assessment of embankments, cuttings and retaining walls.

Ecological surveys – rapid checks for protected species and invasive plant species, full ecological surveys and pragmatic mitigation advice, implementation/site supervision.

Geophysical surveys – full range of geophysical surveys including Ground Penetrating Radar (GRP).

Ground investigations - full range of exploratory techniques for standard and difficult access including rotary and cable percussive drilling, drive-in window sampling, dynamic probing, trial pitting and trenching.

Geotechnical investigations – site, in-situ and UKAS-accredited laboratory testing for soil and rock classification, chemistry, compaction, strength, deformation, permeability and corrosivity.

Contaminated land investigations – on-site sampling, monitoring and testing and UKAS-accredited laboratory analysis for soil, water and leachate quality and contamination and ground gas regime characterisation.

Ground and soil-structure monitoring - supply, installation and maintenance of instrumentation for groundwater levels/pore pressures, slope/embankment and retaining wall load/settlement and deformation/movement, tunnel and tunnelling-related deformation/movement, vibration monitoring, including total station systems and remote telemetry, and data recording, management and interpretation with alarm systems where appropriate.

Earthworks, trackbed, geotechnical and slope engineering – engineering analysis, including 2D and 3D ground deformation modelling, and design of stabilisation and remedial solutions.

Geoenvironmental engineering – data collation and statistical analysis, quantitative risk assessment for human health, water resources and other sensitive receptors, remedial strategies, remediation method statements, specification and contract administration, supervision and land quality verification.

PROPERTY

Asbestos – Types 1, 2 and 3 asbestos surveys, sampling and laboratory analysis and removals management and air clearance testing.

Legionella – Legionella risk assessment and remedial advice, plus water quality sampling and analysis.

Deleterious and hazardous materials surveys – due diligence and health and safety related surveys for deleterious construction materials and for hazardous substances including funguses, lead paint and other heavy metals.

Building technology - airtightness and sound insulation testing, building acoustics and vibration control, thermal insulation surveys and advice, building envelope consultancy, investigation of defects and remedial advice, slip resistance of floors and external paving, stone and slate technology and resource advice, assessment of fire and blast damage.
