London Underground has awarded a 2-year £3.7m contract for the design of the Victoria Underground station upgrade to consultant Scott Wilson. The station is being substantially upgraded in stages to reduce congestion with new ticket halls, entrances, inter-line links and step free access.
"This commission will involve challenging current concept designs, presenting design options and developing a final design," says Brian Hyland, Project Director for Scott Wilson. "We will also be involved with procurement, management and possibly an environmental assessment. The multi-disciplinary teams working on the project will be managed from our Victoria office, which is ideally situated close to the station site."
The site of the Underground station presents a complex project with a wide variety of options. It is a hub of the overground rail terminus, bus and coach station and two underground lines. It is surrounded by proposed developments, nearby listed buildings and difficult ground conditions so the design work needs to consider the effect of congestion at the busy station. There are also issues of heavy surface traffic, restricted access for construction at the site and the possibility of incomplete records of existing structures. To tackle some of these issues modern software, including 3D models, will be used to gain a greater understanding of the site.
