'The Real Risk of Rail Projects' PMProfessional Learning Seminar

12 January 2006 12:19

PMProfessional Learning is hosting its fourth free rail industry seminar entitled 'The Real Risk of Rail Projects’.

The event will be held on 20 January 2006 at The Royal Institute of British Architects in London. It is supported by Network Rail, the Association for Project Management (APM), The Institute for Risk Management (IRM), The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and The Association of Railway Training Providers (ARTP).

This free seminar has an international panel of recognised expert speakers who will describe how to manage strategic risks which can lead to cost overruns of 40% to 80% on major rail projects.

Jeremy Harrison (Head of Project Risk and Value Management, Network Rail) explains how, despite having structured risk processes, strategic risks emerge with significant cost effects. Jeremy will explain the reason why this happens and the steps we can take to react to strategic risk.

Bent Flyvbjerg (Professor of Planning, Aalborg University, Denmark), who has worked with the DfT, will describe how promoters of multibillion dollar mega-projects systematically and self servingly misinform parliament, the public and media in order to get projects approved.

Clive Tucker (Training and Development Manager, Metronet Rail) will review the events surrounding the channel tunnel fire, and how simple steps could have been taken to avoid the root cause of the fire.

Paul Naybour (Director, PMProfessional Learning Rail Division) will explain how we can manage group behaviour to ensure that strategic risks are identified and addressed in an effective way.
