Bonar Floors Helps Keep Virgin Trains Clean

05 February 2008 10:54

Keeping public transport clean and presentable can be challenging, particularly when having to deal with heavy foot traffic from dirty and dusty environments. Virgin Trains has tackled the problem with the help of Bonar Floor's coral entrance matting.

The highly effective coral brush active matting has been installed in the 53 Virgin West Coast main line Pendolino trains and 78 Voyager CrossCountry trains, to help retain the smart carriage interiors throughout the day.

The Pendolino and Voyager trains were commissioned as part of Virgin’s modernisation of its trains running along the West Coast main line and the CrossCountry network with a view to changing the face of rail travel in the UK. The fleet of new trains can reach speeds of up to 125mph and their interiors have been stylishly designed incorporating coral brush Active.

Coral brush active offers performance in moisture absorption, dirt removal, ease of cleaning and appearance retention. Its unique construction consists of three types of yarn, each offering a different benefit. The capillary yarns shaped with a large surface area help absorb moisture; the active yarns provide excellent scraping to help brush off dirt from shoes; and the heavy duty yarns give resilience to withstand heavy foot traffic and hide large quantities of dirt. The matting does not show as dirty within the vestibule area.

Commenting on Virgin's choice of coral as part of the interiors, Tony Collins, Chief Executive of Virgin Trains says: "It's important that as a public transport provider which carries around 41 million passengers a year, we maintain a high standard of excellence in all aspects of our service and this includes the presentation of the carriages. Coral helps us meet these standards because of its ability to trap dirt and moisture as passengers step onto the train."

Coral brush activ is part of a range of textile entrance matting systems from Bonar Floors which includes coral classic and coral duo. Each entrance matting solution offers specific benefits depending on the function, location, soiling and foot traffic it has to withstand. They can also be co-ordinated with the interior décor for a bespoke look.

"Coral is the ideal solution for entrance vestibules and other areas with high traffic such as aisles. Coral crush active was chosen in the vestibules of Virgins trains as it reduced the transfer of dirt and moisture into the saloon environment. In addition, it met the criteria for rail environments and ensured compliance with health and safety standards and fire prevention," says Bob Summers, sales manager for Bonar Floors.
