Trelleborg Industrial AVS Wins District Line Contract

12 June 2006 16:06

Trelleborg Industrial AVS has won a €1.5 million contract from Metronet SSL Ltd. to supply Metalastik® components for the secondary suspension of the D78 stock that runs on London Underground's District Line.

Under the contract, Trelleborg Industrial AVS will supply hourglass bearer springs for approximately 400 carriages being refurbished by Metronet SSL. The Metalastik® springs are of a new design developed to meet a lower height requirement following the introduction of a new flexible frame bogie. Trelleborg's hourglass springs are mounted in pairs, two per bogie, four per carriage.

Metalastik® hourglass springs consist of two hemispheres of rubber bonded to top, bottom and central steel plates, giving excellent load capacity and all-round flexibility. The design accommodates high horizontal, torsional and conical displacements, with vertical frequencies of 1.8 to 2.5Hz. It was developed as an alternative to air springs, which require complex ancillary systems. In addition to high-quality ride performance, the hourglass design offers simplicity, long service life and low maintenance and so is particularly suitable where the operating condition of track and rolling stock may be less than optimal.

Metronet SSL Ltd is a member of the Metronet Consortium and is responsible for the Metropolitan, District, Circle, Hammersmith & City and East London lines of London Underground. Metronet Rail operates under a PPP (Private Public Partnership) regime, providing London Underground with trains, stations and related infrastructure to the standards and performance levels required by LU in order to provide the public with a reliable service over the network in a safe, efficient and economic manner.

Trelleborg Industrial AVS is a world leader in the design and manufacture of rubber to metal bonded components for anti-vibration applications and suspension systems. There are three main brands: Metalastik® is used in rail and marine applications, TrellExtreme® in off-highway and Novibra® in industrial and power generation applications. The company's head office, technical centre and research & development units are located in a new, £10million plant in Leicester, UK while production is divided between Leicester and Sjöbo in Sweden. All are approved to ISO:9001:2000.
