New Gerb Project - City of Charlotte - Charlotte Vintage Trolley Project - Rail Track Bed Isolation System
12 February 2002 15:07
The Rail Track Bed Isolation System for the Charlotte Vintage Trolley Project consists of 456 type GSIV-4420/20 spring elements that will isolate 214 meters of light rail track bed. The system is needed to isolate the concrete track bed that passes through the Charlotte Convention Center in close proximity to conference rooms and other venues. High levels of structure-born noise and vibration must be efficiently mitigated in order to insure high quality meeting accommodations.
The project is part of a $19.7 million investment by the City of Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Charlotte Area Transit System that will create a two-mile, north-south light rail corridor through the city of Charlotte.
Manufacturing of the elements was completed in mid-December 2001 and they were delivered to Charlotte by late December. GERB will supervise the placement of the spring housings in May 2002, and will install the spring elements beginning in late June 2002. The project will be completed in time for the Vintage Trolley to begin passenger service in August 2002.
GERB began working on the Rail Track Bed Isolation System in 1999, together with the City’s architectural firm, The FWA Group, the structural engineers, Walter P. Moore, and the acoustical consultant, Wyle Laboratories. Specifications call for a vertical natural frequency of as low as 5.0 Hz. GERB will inspect the system after one year of operation to insure that all components continue to function effectively.
