In 1918, a new unit was added to the ŠKODA plants to deal with the repair, and later the production, of rail vehicles. It was from this that ŠKODA TRANSPORTATION grew. The first steam locomotive rolled off the production lines in 1920, laying the foundation of a whole range of famous steam locomotives carrying the ŠKODA logo. The production of steam locomotives was terminated in 1958, by which time 3,257 units had been manufactured. By the 1920s, production of electric locomotives had gained momentum in Plzeň, and the first set of electric locomotives were manufactured and put into operation in 1927. ŠKODA electric locomotives proved very reliable under demanding operation conditions. A LEADING PLAYER IN ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVESToday, deliveries to Eastern European countries are once again growing in importance. Successful investments in new product lines, together with the long-term stable market niche and financial stability of the company, indicate the company’s re-emergence as one of the leading players in the European rail industry. To date, 5,553 ŠKODA electric locomotives has been delivered. Our vast experience in this field has resulted in the return of the production of locomotives with features such as:
SWIFT AND POWERFUL THREE-SYSTEM LOCOMOTIVEThe three-system locomotive, ŠKODA 109 E, confirms ŠKODA TRANSPORTATION’s position as a traditional supplier of powerful and reliable driving vehicles. The ŠKODA 109 E locomotive is intended for priority trains, where the locomotive’s power, speed and interoperability can be fully applied. Its design and livery were created with the famous Porsche Design studio. The ŠKODA 109 E locomotive is primarily intended for operation on tracks, not only in Czech Republic, but also on other European Union corridors that are electrified with 3kV DC, 25kV / 50Hz AC and 15kV / 16.7Hz AC systems. For maximal interoperability, the locomotive is ETCS compatible. FOUR-QUADRANT RECTIFIERS, BRAKE CHOPPERS AND FOUR TRACTION-INVERTERSEach of the two inverter blocks contains four four-quadrant rectifiers, brake choppers and four traction-inverters. Water-cooled IGBT modules are used in the inverters. The traction transformer is also suitable for 25kV AC and 15kV AC systems. The 109 E’s processor control, together with CRV and AVV systems, enables multiple controls from either one locomotive stand or a driving car. Four asynchronous traction motors with coiling connected to a double star provide a nominal output of 6,400kW, enabling the ŠKODA 109 E locomotive to easily reach speeds of up to 200km/h. The ŠKODA 109 E locomotive is designed to comply with the newest TSI safety standards, as well as the most demanding European railway operation safety standards.
