Class 350 Platform Project for Network Rail

31 October 2005 14:38

Over the past few months, Laser Rail has been working for Network Rail to assist in the introduction of the new Class 350 Desiro electric multiple units into service on schedule. This prestigious project, which was part of the SRA's re-specification of the West Coast Route modernisation project, is critical to the success of timetable operations. The new trains operate secondary WCML services between Euston and Northampton, Birmingham and Liverpool, and Preston and Northampton.

Laser Rail's contribution to the project involved providing solutions to platform clearance problems by redesigning the platform edge to ensure safe clearance of the vehicle footstep. This two-stage process assessed the required vertical and horizontal movements required to achieve minimum clearances, followed by analysis of the platform construction and consideration of possible solutions such as horizontal coping stone adjustment, vertical coping stone adjustment and track re-alignment. In addition, Laser Rail supervised the re-engineering of each platform site to ensure certification of compliance to the new design.

In total, 72 platforms were assessed using the following methodology:

The most common solution to platform problems was to modify the horizontal coping stone either by cutting the coping stone face or by lifting the coping stone, cutting the back edge and replacing the stone. This solution proved to be the quickest and most cost effective method of providing the required clearances for the client.

This significant project was completed on time to Network Rail's satisfaction. Richard Dugdale, Project Manager for Network Rail said 'Laser Rail were engaged by Network Rail in April 2005 to undertake an urgent programme of gauging surveys at over 60 platforms to enable planning for physical works to permit the new trains introduction. We have been pleased with the willingness and experience of the staff concerned, and their ability to respond to challenges at short notice. Without the capability and flexibility Laser Rail brought to the gauge clearance programme, I am in no doubt that the June 2005 start date of passenger service would have been compromised.'

Laser Rail would like to thank Richard Dugdale for his generous assistance.
