Laser Rail

Heathrow Express Structure and Platform Gauging

11 March 2005 14:03

Client Requirements

The client, Siemens Transportation Systems AG, will shortly be introducing into service their new fleet of Desiro EMUs on the Heathrow Express network. In order to satisfy the requirements of the Vehicle Acceptance Body, the infrastructure of the Heathrow Express Network, comprising over 11.5km of tunnel and four platforms, needed measuring to ensure the new vehicles meet the clearance requirements.

Laser Rail’s Solution

One of Laser Rail’s Laser Gauging Vehicle’s (LGV) strengths is its ability to measure long stretches of network such as Heathrow Express. Using the LGV, the team were able to measure and identify all structures and platforms within 2.5m from the nearest running edge, measure vertically within 6m at rail level, provide composite structure profiles at 5m intervals, measure versines and track cant at each 5m composite length and provide photographic images at each structure for post-analysis work.

The LGV proved to be an ideal solution for this project. Operating at 10mph, the LGV was able to undertake the whole measurement process in just over 1h, thus minimising possession time on track and ensuring the client received data promptly.
