Laser Rail recently took part in an interesting project on behalf of MDS Transmodal and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to reconnect a large MoD site at Donnington to the UK rail network, enabling the transportation of MoD warrior tanks by rail as opposed to road haulage.
The client required the tank and its wagon to be cleared across a number of routes on the network as well as an identification of specific structures, which infringed upon the operational running of the vehicle.
The work consisted of several stages, the first being to assess three problematic structures for clearance issues and provide a solution to alleviate the infringements.
The second stage involved the physical measurement of the MoD Warrior tank and Warwell wagon. Using the information collected, Laser Rail’s designers then created a vehicle model to be used in ClearRoute*, Laser Rail’s gauging software, for carrying out the route assessment requirements of the contract.
The final stage of the work comprised extensive route assessment analysis from Wychnor and Water Orton Junctions to Stafford and Maindee Junctions for MoD clearance, as well as the assessment of the route from Portobello Junction to Stafford Junction based on W7, W8 and MoD clearances. Finally, four other important routes across the network were assessed for clearance of the MoD vehicle.
*ClearRoute is a registered Trade Mark of Laser Rail.
