Laser Rail receives Innovation in Engineering award in the Railway Forum/ Modern Railways Innovation Awards 2006

Laser Rail have been awarded the prestigious Innovation in Engineering award at the Modern Railways / Railway Forum Innovation Awards for 2006, at a ceremony at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London on Tuesday 27th June.

Our entry was our LaserPeT™, a laser measuring system designed to capture continuous and accurate spatial data of the railway infrastructure to establish safe gauge clearance to support system modernisation and maintenance.

The LaserPeT™ spatial measurement system, designed by Laser Rail for Metronet, uses principles of triangulation to continuously capture spatial data of railway infrastructure in relation to track position. This information is used by Metronet to monitor changes in tunnels and movement of the track within the tunnels to ensure that adequate clearance is available for safe operation. The system is currently being used by Metronet on the Victoria and Central lines.

Laser Rail specialises in the management of railway clearances. It has developed specialist measuring systems and analysis software that have been solving the railway industry's clearance problems for over a decade.

Traditionally, clearances have been measured on the underground using wooden 'finger gauges', where manual measurements are taken in key parts of the tunnels, and from this it can be determined whether the track position and tunnel infrastructure is within gauge.

In response to discussions with Metronet Rail, Laser Rail determined the need for specialist measuring equipment specifically aimed at gauging the underground network, and developed LaserPeT™ the system for which we won this prestigious award.

The use of measurement technology and the development of its associated application provides world leading integrated engineering solutions to support the Metronet modernisation programme. Use of this pioneering work will set new standards for the development of Metro systems throughout the world, providing optimized capacity and a safe system for the millions of passengers that use these networks every day.

David Johnson, Laser Rail's CEO says, "Laser Rail is pleased to receive acknowledgement that its technology has been recognised by the industry as a key component of the future efficiency and management of railway network. We are pleased to be a part of modernising the tube, working in close co-operation with Metronet and its project teams."
