Extensive Testing for Tunnel Protection

Marioff has completed an extensive fire test program and test demonstrations with HI-FOG water mist systems for tunnels in San Pedro de Anes Experimental Centre in North Spain.
As regards to the safety systems for traffic tunnels and impressive fire testing background Marioff is continuing its contribution to water mist development. This major fire test program in real tunnel conditions was conducted in co-operation with Spanish research laboratories such as TST for tunnel test site, CEMIM for ventilation and SICOF for measuring. Fire tests were reported in detail by third parties such as Hughes Associates from the USA and the Swedish SP. Also German VdS was witnessing the tests.
As a fire in a tunnel may lead to an extreme dimension in fire size, causing significant damage to tunnel infrastructure, it is important to define the design criteria for active fire fighting systems to be used in tunnels. During Marioff's test program were simulated large truck fires in different ventilation conditions.
The results were very positive, adding more value and confidence in Marioff's HI-FOG water mist systems' capabilities, providing newly developed HI-FOG solutions for tunnels, e.g. a hybrid sprinkler system which uses both open spray heads and specially designed sprinkler heads covered with protective caps. This same method is used also to prevent an unwanted activation of the HI-FOG sprinkler system by heat. These patented systems make it easier to protect wider tunnels by using less water than normally would be required.
In addition to the normal fire test program Marioff organised a tunnel safety conference providing a unique opportunity to witness real full-scale fire tests in a tunnel. Experts from all over the world appreciated this opportunity, and Marioff hosted over 70 guests during this two-day intensive program with presentations by specialists and real fire tests.
