Downer EDI Works Rail specialises in providing clients with comprehensive and integrated engineering and maintenance solutions for their rail infrastructure assets.

We provide a full service for the design, procurement, installation, construction, maintenance, management and commissioning of railway infrastructure, across passenger, freight, mining and tram railways.

Trackwork, signalling, electrification, asset and power supply management

Our range of capabilities and expertise covers:

• Track: standard, narrow and broad gauge, light rail and tram networks, level crossing renewal and upgrade, loop construction, tamping and regulating, stressing / distressing, and tie renewal and concrete resleepering
• Signalling: communication and data systems, and suburban and country networks
• Electrification and power supply: AC and DC power supply, overhead catenary and pole systems for 25kVAC, 1,500VDC, 750VDC and 600VDC
• Specialised civil works: earthworks, drainage, rail foundation stabilising and injection grouting to stabilise rail foundations
• Rail infrastructure asset services: planned and routine maintenance and engineering, asset management, modelling and programming, installation and construction, design and system studies, and emergency response

Zero harm environments for infrastructure assets

Our principal goal is creating a zero harm environment for the safety and welfare of our workforce, contractors and the other people with whom we interface. Our executive officer and senior management team frequently conduct safety tours, empowering and encouraging our employees and contractors to report hazards and not to perform unsafe tasks.

Certified health and safety management system

Zero harm also extends beyond safety and welfare of our work force to include the wider general environment. Downer EDI Works operate to a documented occupational health and safety management system, certified by the Federal Safety Commissioners' Australian Government building and construction occupational health and safety accreditation scheme, and to AS 4801:2000 safety management standards by Bureau Veritas.

ISO-certified integrated management system

The safety management system is incorporated into the Downer EDI Works integrated management system and has been accredited to the ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), AS4801 (occupational health and safety) by Bureau Veritas certification.

Rail safety accreditation

Downer EDI Works are an accredited operator of rolling stock with rail safety accreditation in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. We are audited by state regulators to state rail safety legislation and to the AS 4292 (rail safety management standard) and AS 4360 (risk management standard) and the national rail safety accreditation package (NAP).

The rail safety system focuses on establishing and maintaining employee competence as the primary mechanism to highlight and evaluate both rail safety and personal safety standards and practices. This is aimed at achieving the lowest possible incident rate to our people.
