Ultra Electronics PMES (PMES) is the division within Ultra Electronics that specialises in the specification, design, layout, supply and integration of DC traction substations (typically 0.5MW to 7.5MW, 630V to 3,000VDC) for all forms of railway, mass transit, light rail and depot applications. We are also the UK’s leading designer and supplier of transformer rectifier units and associated equipment for traction substations.

PMES traces its heritage through THORN Automation right back to 1903 when it first supplied transformer rectifier products to the industry under the Foster Rectifiers trade name. Over the last 50 years, PMES has built an experienced system design and project management capability. This capability, allied to our formidable supply chain, enables PMES to cost-effectively execute contracts of virtually any size and scope with little or no risk to our clients and end users.

DESIGN AND SUPPLY OF DC SUBSTATIONS

PMES executes contracts for turnkey projects where the scope encompasses the design and supply of DC substations, including system design, co-ordination, integration, project management, equipment supply, supervision of installation, and commissioning.

PMES’s extensive experience in this field enables it to execute all facets of substation, modularisation, installation, transformer rectifiers units, AC switchgear, DC switchgear, SCADA and LV switchboard design and supply.

SINGLE-SOURCE SUPPLIER OF DC SUBSTATION EQUIPMENT

Our innovative designs are based on decades of refinement, and are commercially competitive as demonstrated by our continued success. As well as offering turnkey solutions, PMES can also act as a single-source supplier of DC substation equipment where the scope of supply includes modular buildings, transformers, rectifiers, AC, DC and LV switchboards, SCADA, auxiliary equipment etc. PMES can also supply stand-alone substation equipment.

In all the above circumstances our range of in-house designs includes transformer rectifier units, Open Circuit Arm Detectors (OCAD), drainage diode cubicles, negative busbar cubicles, earthing contactor cubicles, mimic panels, trackside isolators, depot ‘stinger’ supply units, regenerative braking load controllers, stray-current monitoring, HV control and protection panels marshalling cubicles, pilot boxes and operator / maintainer marshalling panels etc.
