Level crossings and automatic train braking systems

Level crossing systems range

We use two different types of level crossing systems: one with axle counter systems and the other with track relays.

The track relay system is used for unsignalised crossings, and the axle counter system for both signalised and unsignalised crossings.

Axle counter equipment for level crossings

There are two pieces of axle counter indoor equipment installed in the level crossing cabinet, each one 19in x 3U track size. Each axle counter controls one two-counting-point section; it occupies the section when axles enter the section on one of these two counting points and clears the section when all axles exit the section on any of these two counting points.

Level crossing systems have to keep the level crossing deactivated when both sections are clear (basic state). When one of the sections becomes occupied, the level crossing system has to activate the level crossing. While the train is crossing the road, both sections are occupied and the level crossing has to remain active. When the axle counter that was first occupied clears the section, the train has passed the road and the level crossing system can deactivate the level crossing. When the other axle counter clears the section, the level crossing system can return to its basic state.

Each axle counter has one unused counting point that can be used as an additional counting point if there is a crossing point to another track.

DC track relay level crossing system

There are three pieces of DC track relay installed in the level crossing cabinet. Each relay controls one track section; it occupies the section when axles enter one of these track sections and clears the section when all axles exit the section.

Automatic train protection system

The train-borne automatic train protection system consists of:

• Locomotive magnets
• ATPS main command-and-control unit
• Driver control unit

ATPS is a system used for supervising drivers and for stopping the train in cases of the driver disobeying the traffic rules on the track. It is triggered by drivers speeding, passing red signals, or not responding when speed reduction is necessary.
