New Safety Control Solution to Clear the Air in Heathrow Loop

Transmitton, part of Siemens Transportation Systems, is to provide a new tunnel ventilation solution for the Heathrow section of the Piccadilly Line, as part of the Terminal 5 project.
Transmitton, which has also supplied ventilation control for the Thames Tunnel section of the Docklands Light Railway Lewisham Extension, has now been contracted by Tube Lines to supply a similar system for the new airport loop on the Piccadilly Line.
Ventilation is controlled using tried and tested cromos and fastflex technologies, installed extensively across both Jubilee and Northern lines, enabling smoke to be vented away effectively in the event of a tunnel fire. Fastflex Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) equipment will provide the safety critical software and interface with fan controllers in the tunnel loop. Operational control is provided by main and standby server workstations at Earls Court line control room and T123 station equipment room.
Infrastructure account manager to London Underground, Chris Elliott, said: "This contract further strengthens our position as the UK's premier supplier of safety critical applications. The successful delivery of this project will demonstrate our capability to produce future ventilation control solutions for London Underground."
Procurement manager for Tube Lines Ltd, Stephen Shipley, said: "We selected Transmitton for this project because of their experience, proven technology and track record in the UK rail market."
Following the successful completion of its factory acceptance test in December 2006, equipment is currently being installed and commissioned with the final handover scheduled for February 2007.
Terminal 5 is a £4.2bn investment, set to open in spring 2008, giving Heathrow the capacity to manage an additional 30 million passengers a year. As well as a main terminal building, two satellite buildings, an extensive airfield infrastructure with 60 additional aircraft stands and a new air traffic control tower, the project also includes extensions to the Heathrow Express and London Underground's Piccadilly Line.
