The first truly Integrated Station Management (ISM) system, developed by Transmitton, a leading supplier of integrated control and asset management solutions, went live at the modernised King's Cross St Pancras Underground station on Sunday 28th May. Transmitton worked for Costain Taylor Woodrow (CTW) and with Arup Communications to supply a modern station operation facility, compliant with LU and Metronet Standards.
This new ISM solution is comprehensive, matching the complexity of the station layout, and designed to fulfil both current and future demands. King's Cross St Pancras Underground station will act as a gateway for visitors from Europe once the Channel Tunnel Rail Link extension opens in 2007, and will have the capacity needed to serve the new high-speed Kent domestic services, the new Thameslink station, and visitors to London's 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. The first phase of the Underground's redevelopment is nearing completion with a new ticket hall, step-free access to Circle, Hammersmith and City, and Metropolitan lines, enlarged public subways and additional routes to street level already delivered.
Julian Randle, senior project manager at Transmitton, explained, "The common point of control and the key to the project was the design and implementation of the Human Computer Interface (HCI) - the control system which uses Transmitton's ISM application and proven cromos software. The HCI gives station operators immediate control of all station assets including CCTV, public address, passenger help points, customer information and digital voice announcements thorough a single operator interface."
This modern station system negates the use of a traditional point of control. Independent CCTV, PA, PHP, keyboards and microphones are resigned to being a back-up facility. The operator now controls the system via touch screen, headset and mouse.
As well as the station HCI, Transmitton supplied its well-proven fastflex Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) technology to gather operational information on other station assets including lifts, escalators, fans and ventilation, pumps and power systems. By working closely with CTW (the main contractor for Phase 1 of the redevelopment of King's Cross St. Pancras Underground station), Metronet (responsible for maintaining and renewing two-thirds of the Underground) and LU's Engineering Directorate, Transmitton has developed its HCI so that operators can more easily manage day-to-day activities and information flow.
With an expected 50% increase in passenger flow through this site once the Channel Tunnel Rail Link is operational, simple facilities like this are critical. The system underwent an extensive integrated test at Transmitton's headquarters in Ashby de la Zouch before going live on 28th May.
