Integration the Key as Transmitton Updates Romford for Network Rail

08 May 2006

Transmitton, leading supplier of integrated control and asset management solutions to the rail industry, is upgrading the existing traction power SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) control equipment and installing a new dual redundant master station in Romford. The contract, for Network Rail, is worth £2.1 million and continues the company's association with Romford Station, which has lasted since it installed the original system 20 years ago.

Transmitton is supplying the latest cromos control system with a fully integrated Network Management System (NMS). The SCADA master station is fundamental to the storage and dissemination of operational information to aid the running and maintaining of the electrification assets of the rail network. Both the SCADA master station and NMS will be integrated with existing Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) equipment, which is seamlessly connected with the substation equipment. This allows for future renewal and expansion. The new dual redundant master station will have three triple-headed operator workstations. A training system with triple-head workstations that simulate the operational Electrical Control Room (ECR) will enable scenario training with simulated plant responses. The contract also involves communications remodelling, the supply of a new Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and civils work including firewall segregation between critical servers, as well as renewal of the existing electrical system.

Network Rail is seeking to fast-track this project so Transmitton is tasked with achieving delivery and commissioning as quickly as possible - but with absolutely no compromise on safety or operational continuity. Transmitton account manager Annemarie Green said, "Our background gives us a good understanding of the risk issues associated with fast-track programmes in the rail sector. Our proven capability in simultaneously handling these issues and meeting tight deadlines provides our customers with the reassurance that Transmitton is the best company to help them achieve their objectives. We have been running and maintaining the system at Romford since we installed the original one 20 years ago. We are delighted to be able to put in place this significant upgrade and to be able to continue providing support and technical expertise to Network Rail."

The highly skilled and experienced team working on this project is led by Ian Toplis, Senior Project Manager. He has a proven record of project achievements in the rail industry, including the successful management of the main sub-contracts for the East Coast Mainline.
