RailOpt Boosts BLS Lötschbergbahn

31 March 2005 14:20

Completing initial phases of roll-out in October 2004 of the RailOpt Intelligent Resource Management system for railways, BLS Lötschbergbahn credits the solution with efficiencies worth millions of Swiss Franks per annum.

Hägendorf, Switzerland – 31 March 2005 – Qnamic, developer of Intelligent Resource Management software solutions for the railway industry, today announced that Swiss railway BLS Lötschbergbahn has won significant gains in operational effectiveness since implementing RailOpt, the Intelligent Resource Management solution for railways from Qnamic.

”I’d estimate a return on investment on RailOpt at BLS of around six months," confirmed Hans Flury, Chief Financial Officer for BLS Lötschbergbahn. ”Total planning overheads are down 30%. Rolling stock and driver utilisation are up 4%. We’ve also cut tender response times by 75%.“

Using RailOpt, BLS has been able to automate significant components of its tendering and resource planning processes. Not only has RailOpt reduced overheads by reducing manual administration, but because RailOpt can undertake planning scenarios of great complexity to deeper levels of granularity than manual methods, resources can be managed for greater operational effectiveness. When once simple functional effectiveness was sought, like driver, rolling stock or workshop utilisation in isolation, with RailOpt, BLS now undertakes complex holistic planning, maximising resource effectiveness from a total operations view.

RailOpt also supports better, more accurate clearing at BLS. Thanks to this, BLS has been able to improve financial control too. “RailOpt gives us improved transparency of operating costs. We can now use key performance indicators reliably and use balanced scorecard techniques to continuously improve strategic performance and results,“ said Flury.

Using RailOpt, BLS has been able to consider alternative scenarios to optimise operations. For example, a driver depot has been changed and as a result, significant savings will be made through reduced waiting and travelling time.

“Optimally supporting the planning activities and ongoing operations of a railway company represents an extremely complex planning challenge with many different factors that must be precisely synchronised,” said Dirk Pfeiffer, CEO of Qnamic. “By automating critical business processes across the entire tendering, planning and operations cycle, RailOpt empowers railways to operate more efficiently and take more informed control, that they may become more dynamic in a market of increasing change.”

BLS has implemented the full RailOpt software suite, consisting of modules for tendering, service planning, workshop planning, staff rostering, rolling-stock scheduling, short term planning, dispatching and clearing and information management. First phases of roll-out were completed in October 2004.
