NUREMBERG, Germany – September 19, 2006 – MEN Mikro Elektronik is introducing a high-range WLAN interface card for computer systems in mobile applications at this year’s InnoTrans in Berlin. The new product is tested for a temperature range from -40 to +85°C. For example the electronics can be coated against humidity and the components are secured to resist shock and vibration.

Wireless Communication on the Train

The F209L Wireless LAN interface module was designed as a compact plug-in board for CompactPCI systems and is a high-power, high-sensitivity solution for safe wireless communication in harsh and/or mobile environments. Based on the Prism 2.5 chip set it supports WLAN standard IEEE 802.11b. This includes WEP encryption, data transfer rates up to 11 Mbps and 20 dBm output power. The outdoor range is up to 600 meters, with a frequency band of 2.4 GHz using Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS).

The WLAN interface is access-safe on the F209L, i.e. it is not accessible at the front. The CompactPCI module is equipped with two rugged Reverse SMA antenna connectors for safe connection of external antennae.

The F209L is tested for an operation temperature of -40 to +85°C. It is prepared for coating against humidity and the components are secured to resist shock and vibration.

The WLAN function on the F209L is based on a PCMCIA card (PC Card), so that other WLAN implementations with different characteristics but also other wireless connections such as Bluetooth, GSM, GPS etc. can be realized flexibly and fast.

*(CompactPCI is a widely used industry bus in Eurocard format with parallel transmission based on PCI in maintenance-friendly 19” system technology).
