In 2008 an international tender was floated for the enlargement and extension of the rail welding plant Universal Rail Mill of Bhilai Steel Plant, belonging to the Steel Authority of India. After a long and very complex evaluation phase, the contract for the entire welding plant was awarded to the French company Railtech International of Delachaux Group.

The production of long welded rails with a total length of up to 520m had to be considered during the planning stage. At the present time, short rails with a length of 130m are welded to long rails of 260m.

The scope of supply from Nencki for the renewing of the plant includes two rail end brushing machines NRB, four rail head grinding machines NRG, four rail straightening presses NRS as well as one test press for welded rail joints NST 200kN. The welding lines are completed with two rail welding machines from the Schlatter Group and other equipment from Railtech.

Two parallel arranged welding lines were installed, in order to guarantee an annual capacity of 80,'000 welds. For grinding the welds and quality control of the accuracy, the rails are then distributed to four separate lines for space reasons. The demand for the machines was very high because of an operative production of 300 to 365 days per year. This results in an annual operating time of up to 7,200 hours and an output of 1.2 million tons of long welded rails.

Bhilai Steel Plant has already appreciated Swiss Quality from Nencki and uses a four-way straightening press designed for their specific requirmenents. An excellent support by the local Nencki after sales service in India can be offered at anytime.
