Australian and UK-based company Transport Design International (TDI) is a multi-disciplined transport design company specialising in the design and styling of passenger vehicles, including rail rolling stock and marine vessels. Our work includes exterior styling and interior design. TDI has design teams located in Sydney, Australia, and Warwick, UK.

The group carefully monitors international trends in transport vehicle design, particularly in relation to styling, use of materials, user-interface design and ergonomics. Our two studios are in constant dialogue and share workload on fast-track projects. In effect our clients have access to a 24-hour office providing excellent response times and a large pool of design expertise.

CUSTOMISED ROLLING STOCK AND VESSEL DESIGN SERVICES

Since 1988 TDI has completed an extensive range of commissions in Australia, Asia and Europe. Our senior designers and engineers have international experience delivering effective and rapid transport design services and vehicle designs tailored to meet client interests. Our clients range from operators of transport systems, to manufacturers and component suppliers.

The major fields in which we work are passenger rolling stock for high-volume inter-city transportation, high-speed long-distance rolling stock, marine pleasure boats (both power and sail), and automotive and personal transportation products.

The designers at TDI understand manufacturing technologies and engineering requirements. We work closely with our clients' in-house manufacturing engineers to provide documentation suitable for manufacture within the performance constraints provided by our clients.

VEHICLE DESIGN TREND RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

A key aspect of our service is the design research we undertake to identify the driving forces in a particular market sector, be it passenger, automotive or marine. This research enables us to predict trends and develop designs that are appropriate for our clients' markets. TDI provides extensive design research, design development and related services. This menu of services enables our clients to integrate us with their in-house resources and select deliverables that are relevant to their tasks.

DOUBLE-DECK PASENGER TRAINS DESIGN

Designed by TDI, the Millennium double-deck passenger train operates on the Sydney Suburban network. Key features that TDI introduced into the design of this world-class train are distinctive front-end styling, large open interior spaces, a fresh interior colour palette and a unique anti-graffiti seat fabric pattern.

The project involved interior and exterior styling, user-interface testing and the production of a full-scale mock-up.

EMU INTERIOR STYLING, EXTERIOR STYLING AND 3-D FLYTHROUGH ANIMATION

Designed by TDI, Matangi single-deck electric multiple units (EMUs) will be built in Korea by Hyundai-Rotem and will operate out of Wellington, New Zealand. The project involved interior and exterior styling and the supply of a 3-D flythrough animation.

Features of the new design are dramatic front-end styling, increased accessibility for disabled passengers and a seat-fabric design that is derived from tradition Maori cultural art. TDI created a distinctive design that is suitable for low-volume production.

EMU INTERIOR DESIGN AND EXTERIOR DESIGN

TDI was retained by Hyundai-Rotem to develop interior design and exterior design concepts for the Marmaray project of EMUs for Istanbul, Turkey. TDI's design process involved researching traditional Turkish art and design to create a design that is empathetic with Turkish culture.

The interior design features modern forms that are derived from Turkish art and culture. The exterior design is at the leading edge of the latest international trends.
